The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is an annual nine-day Taoist celebration which starts on the eve of the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. In Thailand, this festival is called Thetsakan Kin Che or the Vegetarian Festival. It is celebrated throughout the country, but the festivities are at their height in Phuket, Krabi and Trang.
During the festival, devotees abstain from meat, sex and alcohol. Self mutilation is traditional.
